M 94 (G400) - AstroBin

M 94

This was my first clear sky in the May season since I missed a couple of good ones while I was on vacation. First clouds rolled by but after midnight the sky was clear. I was shooting from my backyard so due to the given hurdles I had to choose an object very high in the sky. So I decided to go for Messier 94. Due to the issue with spiral dithering and the object moving out of center frame by frame on the last sessions I set only to dither after every second frame to mitigate that effect. With respect to total integration time I think I set a new highwater mark at least on the 10" scope. It is very difficult to bring out the outer faint ring around that galaxy even when you see that ring clearly by creating a mask in PI.

Description: The core is sharper in this version showing more details in more balanced colors. But with this object it seems to be a trade-off between how much of the outer ring is to be prominent in the picture versus an uneven and mottled background.

Description: Did a reprocess from scratch. Cut a huge parte from the left in the histogram at the very beginning. So I obtained the smothness compared to the earlier versions.

Description: This version has more sharpness in the core. Unfortunatelly I am not able to tweak the RGB curves in that way as to bring out the colors in the core like in version C.

Description: Did some TGV Denoise on the background and sharpened the core again to bring out some more detail on the inner ring spiral arms.

Description: Red was too pronounced in version F. Did a complete reprocess. Tried not to distort the stars on the course of processing. The background is darker. But highlighting the outer ring seems to add a milk glass view.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
